Population

The Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 235,972 in 1970 to 622,263 in 2010. That was an increase of 163.7 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 7,236 in 1970 to 43,660 in 2010. That was an increase of 503.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 3.1 percent to 7.0 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 153.0 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Domestic migration (NDM) and B-D were the principal factors in adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NDM and B-D continued to account for most of the area's population increase.
